Technology

Five things the studio does, and the products that prove each one. If you are considering a collaboration, this is the shortest honest description of what is on the bench.

01

Physical modelling

Instruments computed from their own mechanics, at full polyphony, in real time.

Epi runs 88 independent hammers, resonators and pickups at once — a struck string behaves like a struck string because the model solves for mass, stiffness and damping rather than crossfading recordings. The same approach carries into materials, transducers and cabinets, all of which are real physical constants in the engine.

02

Analogue and tape emulation

Circuits and transports modelled as circuits and transports.

A tape echo with four heads moving over one piece of tape, wow and flutter derived from transport behaviour, bucket-brigade delay with its own noise and bandwidth, and ten distinct saturation transfer curves rather than one curve at different gains.

03

Audio over IP and studio standards

AES67, AES70, ADAT and MIDI 2.0 running on hardware an order of magnitude smaller than usual.

Broadcast-standard audio networking, device control and digital transports implemented from the specification and running on microcontrollers and FPGA fabric — useful anywhere a product needs studio-grade connectivity without a studio-grade bill of materials.

04

Embedded DSP

Instruments that are the hardware, not a computer pretending to be one.

Standalone synthesis on small processors — audio paths with deterministic timing, and firmware written so the real-time thread stays real-time, from networked transports through to expressive controllers.

AudioBus · MPE controllers

05

Measurement

Claims are tested before they are made.

Every build renders the factory presets and measures them for level, character and discontinuities, and DSP claims are verified against instrumented test harnesses rather than by ear alone. It is slower, and it is the reason the numbers on this site hold up.

Automated on every release

06

Collaboration

Instrument design, DSP, networked audio and embedded firmware — as a partner on a product, or as the engineering behind one. Artist collaborations and sound design projects welcome too.
